Linux ftp built-in
When I first installed Linux I went looking for an ftp client so I could transfer some stuff to my web server. I was frustrated and sad that I couldn’t seem to find one - I chalked it up to another one of those things that I lack in Linux but am used to in Windows.
It took me a few days before I thought to try an ftp address in the file manager’s address window. I noticed that, like Internet Explorer (but in a non-buggy way), Konqueror could both browse files on the hard drive and navigate the web. So I thought that if it could do file:// and http:// that there was a chance it could do ftp://.
Since then I’ve had no need for applications like Kbear or FireFTP (Firefox’s ftp extension). I have a virtual desktop dedicated just to file managers and one of them is always logged in to my web server. It looks and feels just like it was accessing files on my own machine but with a slight latency. That’s the beauty of using the same OS as your web server.
Miguel Guhlin describes his attempt to do the same thing that I did (find a linux FTP GUI client) and how he settled with the same thing as I did. Well, he uses krusader instead of konqueror - but I plan to make the switch soon.
From MGuhlin.net:
Just realized that FTP capabilities are built-into Konqueror and Krusader (a file manager). Krusader’s works quite well and suits my purposes in ways that appear to be better than KBear and Kasablanca. so…Krusader wins it. IglooFTP is just too expensive when you have a tool like this one.
