Linux is easy once you know it

John McClure got into Linux when a friend needed help installing something called ‘Red Hat’ back in 1998. That makes him an expert in my book because I only got serious about Linux a year ago. He makes an excellent point about the ease of using Linux that fits right in with the theme of this website:

From: Linux is easy once you know it
Yes my friends, Linux is so simple, a trained monkey with nimble fingers and a knack for UNIX mainframes could figure it out in several years randomly typing on a keyboard. Er, Linux is so simple, once you’ve gotten the basics down, you’re in for good. Rather than being something silly, that statement is all about how simple Linux is to manage.

Even Klingon and French are easy once you know them, it’s the learning curve that causes so much pain. Brilliant people have attempted Linux and been frightened into a fetal position. It’s for this reason that I hope Linux beginners don’t get intimidated by their new OS. It’s going to be hard at first, really. As John puts it, however, “once you’ve got the basics down, you’re in for good” - that means you’ll be hooked ;-)

Switching to Linux is the best computing decision I have ever made. I switched full-time in 2003, wiping XP off of my main computer completely. I have never been much for “dual-booting.”

    Amen to that Sam.
When I got my laptop I installed Windows first just so I could have it later on but then I forgot about it for two months. It took me that long to remember that there was some other operating system. I still have it there but it’s comical how useless it is.
Even for those who need Windows there’s Wine, VMWare, now Xen. Running a windows machine is now unnecessary ;-)

Hey, just came to your site as soon as I read your comment. Nice work, very well put together. I’m in the process of learning php and css in order to make my site more beautiful. But for now, while I’m excessively busy in other things, I’ll just use what came with WP (WordPress).

I would caution against completely going to Linux however. This isn’t because Windows is in some way more useful than Linux, but more because there are some software that don’t work well with Wine yet. I have four pure Linux systems in my home, and one dual boot, my Laptop.

Well, enough of that, thanks for the referral.

    Cheers
