Ubuntu LiveCD on a Compaq Armada

Xanadb.com has a short post about trying out Ubuntu’s LiveCD on a 7-year-old Compaq laptop. Even three-year-old Compaqs are good for little more than paperweights so I was surprised to read that Ubuntu worked perfectly with all the hardware and even ran the PCMCIA wireless card (NetGear MA401) without a problem.

Score one more for Ubuntu being the distribution of choice for beginners. I feel so out of the loop that I don’t have it installed on anything yet.

    Danger,
I’ve since tried DamnSmallLinux, a distro that occupies just 50M and can run in memory. Once again it comes with Firefox and recognizes the MA401 so I have internet connectivity with zero configuration when I boot from a mini-CD. Apart from being extremely fast, if you run it in memory - it’s eerily quiet too.
You’ve got to try this distribution !

That’s great to hear that DSL is useful for yet another computer. For everybody reading, I heartily recommend you follow walter’s advice. Even if you’re a total computer newbie it’s worthwhile to get a copy of Damn Small Linux. You put it in your cd drive and hit power - that’s it. As soon as you do those two things you’re running Linux which qualifies you as some form of super-nerd.
